Initiative Lifecycle
How to move an initiative through its stages in StartConsole.
Every initiative in StartConsole moves through a defined set of statuses from creation to closure. Understanding these statuses — and the rules that govern transitions between them — keeps your portfolio view accurate and your governance process clean.
The statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Proposed | The initiative has been submitted for consideration but has not yet been approved to start. It sits in the gate review queue. |
| Active | The initiative has passed gate approval and is currently in execution. |
| Completed | The initiative has delivered its outcome and is closed. |
| Delayed | The initiative is Active but has fallen behind its planned timeline. |
| Cancelled | The initiative will not proceed. It is closed without delivery. |
Changing an initiative's status
- Open the initiative detail view by clicking on its title in any list or card view
- Click the Status field at the top of the detail panel — it shows the current status as a coloured badge
- Select the new status from the dropdown
- Save
Moving an initiative from Proposed directly to Active without a gate approval bypasses the governance process. Use this only for initiatives that are pre-approved or exempt from gate review, and note the reason in a decision entry on the initiative.
What each status shows on the dashboard
- Proposed — appears in the "Awaiting Approval" count on the dashboard and in the Gate Reviews screen
- Active — appears in the active portfolio count, feeds into capacity and budget totals, and is included in signal calculations
- Delayed — appears in the active portfolio count with an amber status badge; an automatic signal flag may be raised depending on how far behind the timeline is
- Completed — moves to the Completed archive section; does not count toward active portfolio metrics but is included in realized value totals
- Cancelled — archived immediately; excluded from all active portfolio metrics and signal calculations
