Roadmap
Reference for the Roadmap view in StartConsole.
The Roadmap is a timeline view of your initiative portfolio. It shows every initiative as a horizontal bar spanning its planned start and end dates, giving your leadership team a visual picture of what is being delivered, when, and in what order.
What the roadmap shows
Each row in the roadmap represents one initiative. The bar for each initiative is positioned on the timeline according to its Start Date and End Date fields. The bar colour reflects the initiative's pillar or theme (depending on the current grouping). Initiatives without start or end dates do not appear on the roadmap.
Dependencies between initiatives are shown as connecting lines between bars — an arrow from one initiative to another indicates a dependency relationship.
Navigating the roadmap
Zoom
Use the zoom controls at the top right of the roadmap to change the time resolution:
- Weeks — shows day-by-day detail, useful for near-term program management
- Months — the default view, suitable for quarterly planning sessions
- Quarters — the high-level view for annual strategy discussions and board presentations
Click and drag the timeline to pan left or right. The current date is marked with a vertical line.
Filtering
Use the filter bar above the roadmap to narrow the view:
- Pillar — show only initiatives in a specific strategic pillar
- Theme — show only initiatives in a specific theme
- Status — show only Active, Planned, or Proposed initiatives
- Squad — show only initiatives where a specific squad is allocated
Combine filters to create focused views for specific leadership conversations — for example, all Active initiatives in the Digital pillar for your CTO's roadmap review.
Grouping
Use the Group by control to organise the roadmap:
- Group by Pillar — initiatives are grouped into sections by pillar, with pillar-level headers
- Group by Theme — initiatives are grouped by theme within their pillar
- Group by Squad — initiatives are grouped by the squads allocated to them — useful for capacity conversations
How roadmap items are created
Roadmap items are not created separately — they are generated automatically from the initiative record. Every initiative with a Start Date and End Date appears on the roadmap. To add an initiative to the roadmap, set its start and end dates in the initiative detail view.
To update a bar's position on the roadmap, update the Start Date or End Date on the initiative. You cannot drag bars to update dates directly in the roadmap view — date changes must be made on the initiative record.
