StartConsole for Finance Directors
How finance directors use StartConsole for budget oversight.
Finance directors use StartConsole to track initiative budgets, monitor actual spend against allocations, review expected value delivery, and export financial reporting for governance bodies. StartConsole gives finance visibility into the portfolio without requiring manual data collection from initiative owners.
Pages you will use most
Budget tab (per initiative) — Every initiative has a Budget tab that shows the allocated budget, actuals entered to date, and the current variance. Open this tab to review the financial health of a specific initiative before a gate review or escalation.
Portfolio view (sorted by budget variance) — Use the Portfolio view with the Sort set to budget variance. This surfaces the initiatives with the largest discrepancy between allocated and actual spend at the top of the list, giving finance a fast read of where the financial risks are concentrated.
Gate reviews — Gate submissions for initiatives requesting additional budget or progressing to a delivery phase require finance sign-off. The Gates section lists all pending submissions. Finance directors review the budget and expected value sections before approving or returning a submission.
Executive briefing export — Generate the briefing export with the Budget Overview section selected. This produces a consolidated financial summary across all active initiatives — allocated budget total, actual spend total, and per-initiative variance — formatted for board and audit committee reporting.
Key actions by cadence
Weekly: Check the Signals page filtered to Budget category. Budget overrun signals indicate initiatives that have exceeded their financial boundary and need a decision — reallocation, scope change, or escalation.
Quarterly: Generate the executive briefing export to support the quarterly financial portfolio review. Compare expected value targets to actual spend to assess whether the portfolio is delivering financial returns proportionate to investment.
At gate reviews: Before approving a gate, review the budget request against the initiative's track record. If the initiative has previously overspent, note this as a condition of approval or request a revised budget justification.
Flagging over-budget situations
If you identify a budget concern that has not yet generated a signal, use the Decisions section to log your observation. Link it to the relevant initiative and assign it to the appropriate meeting type. This creates a formal record that the concern was raised, even before a signal is automatically generated.
